Given the convenience of on-street parking, it is often prioritized by certain user groups, to the detriment of those who genuinely need it. Consequently, public or private parking lots are only used when street parking is full.

Cities are also combining a reduction in the space allocated to parking on public land with an increasing specialization of its use. Many parking spaces are thus dedicated to specific vehicle categories: deliveries, motorcycles, spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility, cash-in-transit vehicles, etc.

Similarly, the rise of car-sharing frees users from parking constraints, but often shifts them onto the local authority, which must provide appropriate spaces.

Finally, significant errors can be made: for example, vehicles in prohibited parking may be both more occasional and more economically useful than those in paid parking if the latter are parked for too long.
